An Injury to One

In some tales an injury

shows up on the body of a statue
in a temple, the serpentine
wake from a dagger shunted,
as if pain could be transported
to the body of another. Perhaps this is why
you avoid me in the middle of the night.
You are afraid pain itself
might develop a way to communicate.
