Malgudi Days

Championed early on by Graham Greene, R. K. Narayan grew up in South India and wrote all his books—fourteen novels, eight collections of stories, a memoir, and several volumes of nonfiction and retold legend—in English. Narayan’s work is set in Malgudi, the fictional South Indian town that has elements of both the country and the city. Malgudi is to Narayan what Macondo is to Gabriel García Márquez and Yoknapatawpha is to William Faulkner.
