Ann Beattie sparked endless laughter and astonishment with her performance of this brilliantly antic story of marital discord. The reading took place at Narrative Night 2010 in San Francisco.
Ann Beattie’s advent in the 1970s as the voice of a generation helped create a global short story renaissance. Her explorations of the subtle cruelties and desires of the heart have continually sustained and advanced the story form, and in 2000 she received the PEN/Malamud Award. Her seven remarkable novels include Chilly Scenes of Winter and Picturing Will. She teaches at the University of Virginia, and her recent works, such as the collection Follies, set the high-water mark for pleasure in literature. Several of her stories can be found in our Archive.
