Time Will Darken It

Legendary New Yorker editor William Maxwell (1908–2000), whose abiding wisdom and skill over his four-decade career at the magazine helped shape the careers of Eudora Welty, John Cheever, John O’Hara, J. D. Salinger, and John Updike, among others, was first a writer: his debut novel, Bright Center of Heaven, was published to acclaim when he was just twenty-six. By the time he published Time Will Darken It in 1948, Maxwell was working at the height of his powers.
