Five Poems

Auntie Oracle

Auntie Zlata, first-grade teacher, prophesied my later
issues. “You will wallow in seas of milk
without ability to digest lactose.”
Since this was the beginning of the world,
lactose intolerance didn’t exist and my parents
demanded an explanation.
Auntie Zlata: “He will deal in mystery without inhabiting
it, he will wear coats that are too tight,
he will be devoted but not committed, from an early age
he will be an old man, full of pride and dismissive of therapy.”
