A Mary Morris novel is an open door I can walk into unafraid that I will be slammed out by weakness of any kind. I easily climb into her protagonists' minds and contemplate the world through their eyes. Morris's novels keep me there, even when the characters veer off in unsympathetic ways, like Zoe who truly wrongs her wonderful brother Badger, or like Andrea Geller who often falls away from honesty and integrity.
This story was a surprise; it gave me a new gift from Mary Morris--a shift. Pete and Karen are opposites. Karen is a familiar Morris character--capable, accomplished, and imperfect, but she drew me into her thoughtful center. Karen keeps her place in my reading heart, until suddenly the barely-sketched but well-revealed Pete steals the show. My heart shifts over to wild, troublesome Pete.
It's not easy for a writer to create characters we care about. Although Mary Morris has done that for years, in a few strokes she presents a new formula: a sympathetic character who, while not exactly fading, steps aside in the light of something new, an ephemeral magic housed in the unworthy Pete.
Mary Morris is a talented storyteller. Her stories open a door to a wonderful world of fiction. I can find whatever I need to enjoy. I have created an alert on her name to get the most updated news about her daily. She is also generous about introducing new writers. Unfortunately it is not possible to order her books directly from Tehran. Normally I ask my friends to buy me some copies and bring back on their homecoming trips!
I read "The Climax Forest" completely to the end, and at each turn I was there with Karen and Andy. Delicious!
