Wow, I ache. Your story was real, with sharp elbows that poked me far too many times and said, "You know what that's like, don't you?" I didn't like that part, but I did enjoy your story. Thank you.
It is incredibly gratifying to read a story that realistically portrays both alcoholism and the attempts at recovery without being melodramatic, saccharine, or cliched. As someone who has lived with family members suffering from addiction, I appreciate the portrayal of the struggle for everyone involved and I hope other readers with the same experience are moved as well.
Regardless of whether the reader has been in situations of a friend's or acquaintance's alcoholism, the honesty of human character is clearly evident. Thank you. This piece is equally beautiful and painful.

This is really good. I think the judges got it the wrong way around, but never mind. Really good. Thanks, Brian.

Wonderful story, excellent writing!
Crisp, whip-smart prose wrapped around a throat-punch story. The judges surely got this one wrong. Can we take to the streets for a rejudge?
