A Story

by Eugene Cross

Very engaging, very different from what I've been reading lately in literary magazines. Sam is quite real as is the setting and point of view. The ending is indefinite, enigmatic. The robbers had to have spoken with Luke, yes. Did he know about the robbery? Maybe. I want something between that clue and Sam's envisioning the end of his relationship. Some bit of evidence or internal dialogue to support the conclusion.

I liked the entire piece, including the subtlety of the revelation of Luke's complicity in the robbery. I did wonder a little that the two goons in the house failed to do anything to prevent Sam from ID-ing them for the police. They were amateurs perhaps, but they did have weapons, and letting Sam get away virtually scotfree -- to tell the tale, of course -- struck me as awfully convenient for the author. With this nitpicky exception, I buy the psychology of these characters and hope to read more by Eugene Cross.
