An Essay

by Robert Louis Stevenson

There is so much room for so many comments, I am beginning what I hope will turn into a nice long discussion. From the perspective of a 57-year marriage, I find this essay right on the mark. What surprises me is the choice of metaphor: strategy and tactics of war. If young couples could be accustomed to the somewhat elaborate style of a century and more past, this would make the perfect preface for anyone empowered to perform the ceremony of matrimony.

I've read very little Stevenson. Thank you for introducing me to this.

As the (mis?)translation of the Hebrew puts it: a wife will be both helpmeet and adversary. The same is true of a husband and if young couples knew it going in, more of them would get the ship safely to port.
