A Story

by William Kittredge

I love this story. It makes me feel good to be alive, and nostalgic for earthier times, and hungry for Spam and Beer, and any breath of air I can still draw. I love the characters and the way they are written. Who is this guy, this writer? I love him, too.

Oh my. The lovely turn into the long future at the end!

Kittredge is a beautiful writer--spare, yet evocative. His salt-of-the earth stories and essays are on par with Cormac McCarthy and N. Scott Momaday. This Kittredge piece, simple yet deeply metaphorical, is a proud example of the culture of fine and diverse writing in the state where I live.

It's funny how, even when the details are clouded by an unfamiliar style of discourse, set in another time and a very different way of life, the essence of the message still comes clearly. How delicious to be transported to a time so strange and far away, yet so familiar.
