An Interview

John Lescroart is the author of twenty published novels, of which a stunning eleven in a row have been New York Times bestsellers. His novels have been translated into sixteen languages and published in seventy-five countries. But the sixty-one-year-old Lescroart did not earn a living and find success with his writing until well into middle age. He spent his twenties pursuing his first love by trying to break into the music business as a singer/songwriter. He occupied his thirties working as a bartender, moving man, and house painter, as well as in other odd jobs, while teaching himself to write. Then, when he was forty-one, he suffered a near-fatal bout of spinal meningitis. Afterward he decided to dedicate himself full-time to his writing. Five years later his seventh published novel, The 13th Juror, became his first bestseller. Lescroart was forty-six.
