The day before the Narrative party in Seattle, torrential rains fell on the Pacific Northwest—nineteen inches in a single day on Mt. Rainier, ten inches on Seattle—flooding roads and stalling air traffic. Friends and some of the authors were traveling cross-country to be at the party, and we were flying up from San Francisco, a hop often delayed even when the weather is temperate. But perhaps because we were too busy with last-minute details, or because we’d worked so hard organizing the party, or because national elections were being decided that day, or simply because fate was out of our hands, we didn’t worry about whether Narrative’s evening would come off well. The day before the Narrative party in Seattle, torrential rains fell on the Pacific Northwest—nineteen inches in a single day on Mt.
