Margaret Atwood is Canada’s most eminent novelist and poet. The author of more than fifty works of short fiction, criticism, screenplays, and books for children, she is best known for novels whose strong women characters wrestle with contemporary urban life and sexual politics. Atwood’s recent work includes The Door, a collection of poetry, Payback, and The Year of the Flood (2009). She serves as vice president of international PEN as well as honorary copresident of the Rare Bird Club of Birdlife International. Atwood lives in Toronto.

During her 2009 book tour for The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood partnered with Los Angeles musician Orville Stoeber to perform a number of environmentally themed hymns from the book’s pages. In addition to three of the songs that resulted from this collaboration, we’ve compiled a number of clips from Jo Scott-Coe’s recent interview with Atwood, in which the acclaimed Canadian writer discusses a range of topics—from the role of “secular saints” in contemporary society to our inherent need for amusement and the delicate balance novels must achieve between entertainment and education.
