Katharine Whitcomb is the author of the poetry collection Saints of South Dakota and Other Poems, chosen by Lucia Perillo as the winner of the 2000 Bluestem Award. She has received several fellowships and lives in Ellensburg, Washington, where she coordinates the writing specialization major at Central Washington University.

                          wrap around my
                          ankle like a snake?


                                                    Snake

who might tie me
                          upside down to the beautiful tree
            and hold me, hair
                          hanging, above
deep water.
