Susan Kinsolving is the author of the poetry collections The White Eyelash; Dailies & Rushes; Among Flowers; and My Glass Eye. Glimmerglass Opera commissioned her to write lyrics for a cantata entitled Constellations, and several of her poems have been set to music and performed in the United States and abroad. A recipient of the Poetry Society of America’s 2009 Lyric Award, Kinsolving has served as poet in residence at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.

As directed, Mother’s ashes were released
into Lake Michigan. Fresh water, no salt tears,
and a continent between her ashes and Father’s,

which she had “scattered” six years before
into the Pacific. For him, she was asked to sign
a release not to bring suit in case commingling
