Jim Harrison is the author of thirty-three books, including Legends of the Fall and Dalva, and was a food columnist for many years. His work has been produced as four feature-length films and translated into two dozen languages. As a young poet, he coedited a literary magazine with Dan Gerber that earned several honors. Harrison divides his time between Montana and southern Arizona.

I want to bother you with some recent nonsense; a classmate dropped
dead, his heart was attacked at thirty-three. At the crematory
they lowered his body by fire-resistant titanium cables reminding
one of the steak on a neglected barbecue grill, only more so. We’re
not supposed to believe that the vase of ashes is the real him.
