Bob Hicok is the author of numerous poetry collections, including Sex & Love &, Hold, and Red Rover, Red Rover (Copper Canyon Press, 2021). Hicok received the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress, as well as eight Pushcart Prizes. He is a professor of creative writing at Virginia Tech.

Two Things Added Equal a Third

The deer didn’t move—on our walk—little deer

where the path turns toward the road—I spoke to it—

said my you’re pretty—said we should do this again—

in my best holding-a-baby-in-my-arms voice—and slid by—

and felt as I did when my pants came back

from the dry cleaner’s with wild roses in the pockets—
