All of us together in a room
and the sun coming in. So strong
it felt as if light had been born
there on the floor. I stood and read aloud,
a family becomes fossilized—a darker crosshatch
etched in hard sand.
I wanted to believe it then,
after the funeral, and later, after the last dried
corners of the casseroles were pried loose
