Rebecca A. Spears is a poet and essayist and the author of the poetry collection The Bright Obvious. The recipient of numerous awards for her writing, she earned an MFA from Bennington College, an MA in English from Southern Illinois University, and a BA in German from the University of Texas. Spears lives in Houston.

Sartre and Beauvoir in the Sahara

Even beyond that swallow, and the next dune,
the letter from yet another lover
does not arrive.

Sartre composes a response in his head.


Delivered with his sentiments
the orchid blooms
shrivel now in the unwatered jar,
Michelle feverish in Paris
from the abortion.
