Ben Kingsley, author of Dēmos: An American Multitude, Colonize Me, and Not Your Mama’s Melting Pot, was born along Pennsylvania’s Rust Belt and belongs to the Onondaga Nation of Indigenous Americans in New York. He holds an MA from the University of Pennsylvania and is an assistant professor of poetry and nonfiction at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Pick Your Switch

“Pick your switch,”

says my father           and I’m stepping

out into the backyard forest           the sycamores

are not a spilled latticework           of bent elbows not

the bony helter-skelter           cage of likely beaten

boys they are just           fucking

trees.           I root

through God’s           mottling

underbelly His surfacing          grasshopper lesions

root out a stick           who will come alive for me
