Matthew Gellman, a finalist in Narrative’s Thirteenth and Tenth Annual Poetry Contests, was born in Dresher, Pennsylvania. He received an Academy of American Poets Prize and earned an MFA from Columbia University. Gellman lives in New York and teaches at Hunter College.

Brother in C Minor

The dog got loose when we came home
and you ran after him toward the park,

calling his name while our father turned to me
and said, Why does he sound like a girl.


It was a question asked in the dark
of the garage, next to the power tools,


in a low voice, this man who thought
we were too close to being daughters.
