Carlie Hoffman, the author of This Alaska (Four Way Books, 2021), received a 92Y/Discovery Prize and an Amy Award from Poets & Writers. She earned her MFA from Columbia University and lives in New York, where she teaches writing at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

A Blessing

It seems to me a blessing now that my sister
came first, raging and reigning like a human
through the house, while our younger brother
and I crammed our bodies underneath the round
dining table, field mice entering a tulip’s ear.
