Dion O’Reilly, Second Place winner of Narrative’s Seventeenth Annual Poetry Contest, is the author of three poetry collections: Limerance (Floating Bridge, 2025), Sadness of the Apex Predator, and Ghost Dogs. In addition, her work has been included in several anthologies, including A Constellation of Kisses. She earned an MFA in creative writing from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, and has spent most of her life on a small farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Fallen

No one could prove it, but we were sure
the neighbor shot the horse. I was six
and already sick of being alive. Too much
kept happening: chicks escaped from incubators,
fell behind the pantry counter
into deep, unreachable cracks. Their peeps faded.
Then the smell.
