Catherine Raven is the author of the memoir Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship (Spiegel & Grau, 2021). A former national park ranger at Glacier, Mount Rainier, North Cascades, Voyageurs, and Yellowstone national parks, she earned her PhD in biology from Montana State University and holds degrees in zoology and botany from the University of Montana. She is a professor at South University in Savannah, Georgia.

Dark hawk-sized birds are circling overhead with their wings raised and their “fingers” spread wide. Bending my neck backward, I try to spot their telltale red heads, but I know who they are anyway. It’s midday and no one’s moving in this record-breaking heat except me and those turkey vultures. They think I’m about to keel over. Vultures are scavengers, but they prefer their meat fresh.
