Luisa Muradyan, a finalist in Narrative’s Seventeenth Annual Poetry Contest, is the author of the poetry collections I Make Jokes When I’m Devastated (Bridwell, 2025) and American Radiance. She holds a PhD in Poetry from the University of Houston and an MFA in Poetry from Texas State University. Originally from Odesa, Ukraine, she lives and teaches in Kansas City.

My Daughter’s Daughter Is Sad

She holds her upside down in the tub

and tells me baby is crying, and I tell her

that maybe it is time for her nap or maybe

she is hungry or maybe she is just sad. My daughter

is learning how much guessing is involved in motherhood.
