Matthew Zapruder, born in in Washington, DC, is the author of six poetry collections, including I Love Hearing Your Dreams (Scribner, 2024) and Come On All You Ghosts, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, as well as two books of prose: Why Poetry and Story of a Poem (Unnamed, 2023). Zapruder teaches in the MFA program at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and lives in San Francisco.

in a lock from which gold light shone.

material below a painting glows to explain
the nineteenth century and other things we must know.
