God, this was beautiful. And heartbreaking.

It is beautiful and heartbreaking--partly because Bendel is the image too many of us have in our minds of ourselves but without the justification. Great profile of an era as well as the men who lived through it.

I didn't want this to end, at least not until Bendel's masterpieces made it to press, but nonetheless I was relieved HE hadn't ended. So much wit and sadness and history in this elegant piece - I'm going to print it and pin it to my old-fashioned bulletin board as a model of Real Writing.
