I’m having trouble paying the submission fee or uploading my manuscript. What do I do?
Please use the Contact Us page to send an email indicating your problem. If you are receiving an error message while attempting to pay the fee or submit your work, please include the message in your inquiry.

I don’t want to complete an Internet transaction using my credit card. Is there any other way to pay the Submission Fee?
As a nonprofit organization, we are committed to paying writers for their work and to making the magazine available to readers for free. Therefore we work hard to keep administrative costs down, which means we are regrettably unable to accept payment via check or other methods.

Do you ever have open submission periods?
Yes, we do. Please visit the Submission Guidelines page for more information.

When I uploaded my submission, I accidentally indicated the wrong genre for the piece. Does that matter?
No, it doesn’t. If we have questions regarding the genre of your piece, we will contact you.

When I uploaded my submission, I forgot to give biographical information. What can I do?
You can use the Contact Us page to send an email, indicating the title and date of your submission.

Can I submit a piece in a language other than English?
Sorry, Narrative is an English-language publication.

Can I submit a piece that has been published in only one region (e.g., Canada, the UK, Australia), or in a limited print run?
Narrative is thrilled to count readers in countries around the world. We strive to present first-class, first-run literary fiction and nonfiction for all our readers, so we ask that it be previously unpublished, regardless of nation.

Can I submit a piece that has been previously published only online?
Sorry, no.

Since I submitted my manuscript, I’ve noticed a small edit or two I’d like to make. Can I send you a revision?
We’re grateful for your keen eye, but if the editors want a revision of your piece, we’ll contact you. No need to worry about typos—we can read past them.

A manuscript I submitted has been accepted for publication elsewhere. What do I do?
As soon as possible, use the Contact Us page to inform us of your good news, and accept our congratulations!

How often do you publish Narrative issues online?
We continually publish new content—weekly, biweekly, and monthly, depending on the feature.

Do you publish a hard-copy verison of Narrative?
From time to time, Narrative Magazine compiles a hard-copy edition and also publishes books. Currently available hard-copy editions and books can be found in our online store.

If I send in a submission in the General Submissions category, is that for online publication or for publication in the hard copy?
Narrative originated as a digital publication—the first such for quality literature—and remains a digital publication, though from time to time we publish hard-copy editions. All General Submissions are considered for both online and hard-copy publication. If your submission is accepted for publication, we will then determine how best to publish it.
The vast majority of our readers view the magazine online and via mobile devices; however, many of the pieces currently in our online Library have also been included in the hard-copy editions, which we have produced mainly for libraries, for the tech-challenged, for those who simply prefer to read hard copies. But, again, our hard-copy audience is a fraction of our online audience.

How can I read Narrative on my Kindle?
Narrative publishes a monthly Kindle edition which you can access here.
