Ann Beattie’s emergence in the 1970s as a preeminent writer was key in creating the 1980s short story renaissance. Her exploration of the subtle cruelties and desires of the heart has steadily advanced the story form, and in 2000 she received the PEN/Malamud Award for Lifetime Achievement for her first seven story collections. Ann and her husband, the painter Lincoln Perry, live in Florida and in Charlottesville, where she teaches at the University of Virginia.
