E. B. White (1899–1985) made a lasting contribution to children’s literature with beloved books such as Stuart Little; Charlotte’s Web, winner of a Newbery Honor; and The Trumpet of the Swan. His Elements of Style has remained the classic handbook of grammatical guidance. He received a special Pulitzer Prize for the full body of his work, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal. White’s legacy includes the E. B. White Read Aloud Award, given yearly by the Association of Booksellers for Children.
