Julie Otsuka

Julie Otsuka is the author of three novels, including The Swimmers (Knopf, 2022). Her first, When the Emperor Was Divine, won the Asian American Literary Award and the American Library Association’s Alex Award. The Buddha in the Attic was an international bestseller that earned the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction, the Prix Femina Étranger, and the Albatros Literaturpreis. Born and raised in California, Otsuka lives in New York City.
