This Wednesday

After shelving a book about presidential ghosts,
the librarian says the metal bookend leapt
off a shelf onto her head. The other librarian laughs
because she believes nothing beyond the body

is real. This is not a very quiet library. I don’t
mind. I like their chatter and the charming ways they fail
to drown out the printer that sounds like
it’s undergoing heart surgery with no anesthetic.
