Notes on Writing a Novel

An Essay

by Elizabeth Bowen

This is absolutely remarkable; it certainly contains the truth. I feel slightly vertiginous contemplating these words. As an editor, I feel humbled. I should have been familiar with this work a long time ago.

Reading something like this, I almost feel as if the writers of today have forgotten how to express themselves properly in words! (I've had this experience with other pieces from the 1940's and 1950's that have appeared in Narrative.)
