The masters program in creative writing at the University of Denver focuses on craft as well as the business side of publishing, including working with agents and publishers and creating a personal brand. The doctoral program resembles a pure mathematics or philosophy PhD. Doctoral students do a good deal of hard critical reading and research, and some of them write and publish traditional literary critical works.
