Santa Monica, California

When I moved to Santa Monica fifteen years ago, I accepted that I was not going to live in a city along the lines of my native New York or other urban centers I’ve known, such as London, Paris, Jerusalem, and Budapest. Nevertheless, I considered Los Angeles the only suburb of New York I’d live in, and I chose a neighborhood where the houses were close together and I could walk to a coffee shop. In my mind, living in Santa Monica would be comparable to going to the Hamptons for the weekend and never coming back. I certainly didn’t think I was moving to the wilds of nature.
