Bastard-Girl

Tony Salvatore is the scuzzy king of the sixth grade. Tony Salvatore clicks sour candies against his teeth and calls the art teacher a bitch under his breath as she walks away, which makes the boys who sit near him laugh. Kabeer laughs too long, Mina notices, and he starts hiccupping. She bites her lip and hopes Tony doesn’t say anything because it would reflect poorly on her too—every flaw of Kabeer’s is implicitly a flaw of hers because they are twins. Tony grins and puts a dot of blue paint on the end of his nose. He wears a camo jacket and has a long neck like a llama, so that when Mina sees pictures of llamas or even alpacas, with their heavily lashed eyes, she feels a jolt of recognition.
