My wife calls to say my daughter’s eye is out, initially suspected lost on the National Mall or in one of the museums that line the avenues named Independence or Constitution, the eye, both unseeing and unseen, perhaps having settled against the baseboard of a burnished terrazzo floor or come to rest at the feet of cavemen in a diorama.
