Narrative High School Writing Contest

Welcome to the High School Contest—an invitation to be discovered and to have your voice shared with the world!

This year’s Seventh Annual High School Writing Contest invited students grades 9-12 in the U.S. and abroad to submit a poem in response to the prompt: Blind Spots. Winners received cash prizes totaling over $1,000, mentorship, and publication in Narrative alongside the world’s great writers! Congratulations to all the students and teachers who participated in this year’s contest. Your work and passion inspired and amazed us.

This year’s judges included New York Times–bestselling author and Narrative cofounder/editor Carol Edgarian, poetry editor Michael Wiegers, and guest judge, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Jericho Brown. The three winning writers—Andrew Kang, Stella Lei, and Bella Koschalk—were mentored and edited, fine-tuning their poems and engaging in all aspects of a professional publishing process, awarded with cash prizes, and published in Narrative!

Contributing students in this year’s Narrative Contest covered the globe: indeed, we received submissions from seventeen countries, including South Africa, Malaysia, Ghana, Nepal, Taiwan, and more. Within the United States, we heard from young poets in 36 states and more than 140 cities—an amazing outpouring of poetry. In all, this year our Narrative in the Schools programming reaches more than 100,000 students and teachers in schools worldwide, across 28 countries, 41 U.S. states, and 298 cities around the globe.

Our Eighth Annual High School Writing Contest will open for submissions in January of 2023. Be sure to subscribe to Narrative or check back here to receive Contest updates straight in your inbox!
