The Sin of Height

An Excerpt from Levels of Life

by Julian Barnes

I hadn't previously seen history written in this manner -- the details, feelings, morals, culture and, of course, the significance. For me it has all the elements of good fiction. Had to keep reminding myself that those things actually happened, and that those characters brought them about. Barnes expanded my view of history and writing style. Liked it.
