Gorgeous writing. Shows how the specific is our most reliable route to the inclusive. I live in a southern Mediterranean country, close to Africa. This poem is about us, right now. It's also about history. If ever there was an argument in favour of the need to nurture reading and writing skills, literary studies, the humanities tout court, this poem is it. I can see it being performed on stage, recited to a YouTube audience. The world needs to hear these words.
