We are always on the lookout for photography portfolios and photo essays of exceptional quality. Visual art has become an increasingly important part of the magazine and contributes meaningfully to our sense of what constitutes story. In looking for works to publish, we consider technique, image quality, variety, theme, and artistry. In photo essays we look for narrative or other unifying elements. We also accept captions and written narratives accompanying photography. We welcome any and all submissions of images that will speak to our readers and that offer aesthetic pleasure.
Formatting: Photographs in a submission must be contained in a single .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .docx, or .txt file. Images should be submitted in low resolution; however, upon acceptance, images must be provided with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, or greater, and as a .tiff or .jpg that can be reproduced at 1,650 pixels wide.
Text with the images: Captions or text submitted with your images should be contained in the single file that contains the images. The captions or text should be numbered or placed to indicate a corresponding order with the photographs. All written portions of your submission should be in 12-point type, with at least one-inch margins, and your pages should be sequentially numbered. Please include your name, address, telephone number, and email address at the top of the first page. You may also include a brief biographical note with your submission.
Payment: Our rates vary, depending on the length and nature of the work. The payment for photo essays ranges from $250 to $2,000.
Submission Fee: There is a $20 fee for each submission. And with your submission, you’ll receive three months of complimentary access to Narrative Backstage.
Response Time: Our response time varies from four to twelve weeks, with the slowest times usually being August/September and December/January.
